Before We Begin: Check Your Compatibility
Before you begin the update process, it’s important to check whether your device is compatible with iOS 18. Apple releases new versions of the operating system that are designed to work with specific devices and hardware configurations. If your device is not compatible, attempting to update could cause issues with your device.
To check your compatibility, go to Settings > General > About on your device. Look for the section labeled Software Update. If iOS 18 is available, you’ll see a message indicating that an update is available. Click on this message to start the update process.
Step 1: Back Up Your Device
Before you begin the update process, it’s important to back up your device. This will ensure that all of your data and settings are safe in case something goes wrong during the update process.
There are several ways to back up your device, including iCloud backup and manual backup using a computer or external hard drive.
iCloud Backup
To set up iCloud backup, go to Settings > iCloud on your device. Sign in with your Apple ID if you haven’t already done so. Once you’re signed in, turn on the iCloud Backup switch. This will automatically back up your device to iCloud whenever you connect to Wi-Fi.
Manual Backup
To set up manual backup using a computer or external hard drive, follow these steps:
- Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
- Open iTunes on your computer and select your device from the list of devices in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click on the Backup tab.
- Click on the Start Backup button. Follow the prompts to choose where you want to save the backup file and whether you want to encrypt it.
- Disconnect your device from your computer once the backup is complete.
Step 2: Install the Update
Now that you’ve backed up your device, you can proceed with the update process. To do this, go back to Settings > General > About on your device and look for the Software Update section. If iOS 18 is available, click on the Download and Install button.
The update process will take some time, depending on the size of the update and the speed of your internet connection. During the update process, your device may reboot several times. Make sure to avoid using your device during this process to prevent any potential issues.
Step 3: Verify the Update
Once the update is complete, it’s important to verify that the update was successful. To do this, go back to Settings > General > About on your device and look for the version number of your operating system. If it says iOS 18, then the update was successful.
